My Personal Guide: 12 Life Rules for Better Living

Written on

Understanding My Life Rules

While my name may not be as famous as Jordan Peterson's, I believe I have the right to lay down my own principles for living. These guidelines have been beneficial for me.

  1. Avoid Being Disrespectful

Life can feel like a classroom, and if "don't be a jerk" were the first lesson, many would raise their hands in agreement. This concept often seems challenging for some.

Even on tough days, wearing a smile and pushing through can help lift your spirits. While being rude may feel good momentarily, it’s unlikely to leave you feeling better in the long run. At home, if either Laura or I is feeling down (which is rare), we make an effort to acknowledge our feelings and manage them effectively.

  1. Take Action When Things Go Awry

During my short experience with marriage counseling, my therapist imparted a memorable lesson: "If you have an issue with someone and haven’t communicated it, the problem lies with you." I've witnessed numerous couples stuck in unhappy relationships, too fearful to address or leave a situation that’s become unpleasant. Beyond just marriage, this principle encourages proactivity. Engage actively in life; significant issues rarely resolve on their own.

  2. Prioritize Cleanliness

Showering before bed—or even before work—has become a cherished routine for me. There’s something invigorating about feeling clean, and I dislike the idea of soiling my sheets. Good hygiene is particularly beneficial in dating, as many men overlook this crucial aspect. Remember, cologne is not a substitute for a shower.

  3. Embrace Change

This rule isn’t about swinging, but rather about being adaptable. Life is ever-changing, and shaking up your routine can greatly enhance your mood. This is a personal challenge for me, as I'm naturally inclined to stick to my habits, which can sometimes dull the joys of life.

  4. Practice Humility

Whenever I've allowed my ego to overshadow my judgment, life has a way of humbling me swiftly. As the saying goes, "Pride goes before a fall." Staying humble keeps you grounded and saves you from unexpected humbling experiences.

  5. Tackle Difficult Tasks First

This approach helps maintain motivation. In my writing process, I strive to produce a coherent set of sentences before outlining the rest of the piece. Completing challenging tasks early on boosts confidence and assures you that the simpler tasks lie ahead.

  6. Leave a Positive Impact on Others

After reading numerous articles about toxic relationships, I ponder whether there’s a recurring pattern among certain individuals. The negative influence of a few can be alarming. I aim never to look back and see myself as a cause of someone’s distress. My parents taught me to leave spaces better than I found them; I strive to extend this principle to people.

  7. Share the Road Responsibly

Even when I exceed the speed limit, there's often someone tailgating me, as if they're rushing to an emergency. Yet, driving is one of the most dangerous activities we do daily, and some neglect basic safety measures. Sharing the road and practicing patience enhances overall efficiency for everyone.

  8. Make Few Promises but Honor Them

Few things are more frustrating than individuals who make commitments without following through. Maintain your integrity and honor your word, even when the stakes seem low. Trust is built on reliability, and keeping your promises fosters a sense of community.

  9. Adapt, Don’t Break

In my previous corporate role, we discussed the importance of encouraging teams to meet deadlines without overwhelming them. The reminder to "bend, don’t break" applies to both work and personal challenges. Allow yourself to be affected by experiences, but don’t let them define you.

  10. Perspective is Key

I avoid making long-term decisions based on fleeting emotions. This approach helps me refrain from overcommitting during moments of joy or despair. Upon reflection, most stressful situations aren’t as dire as they initially appear.

  11. Utilize Five Minutes Effectively

I’ve discovered that dedicating just five minutes to a task can lead to significant productivity. Whether it's tidying up, drafting an article introduction, or reaching out to an old friend, small increments can create powerful changes in your life.
