Greetings, everyone! In this week's post, I want to share my thoughts on an app I frequently mention in my newsletter—LingoDeer. While I typically have reservations about language apps, I must admit that LingoDeer stands out as the best choice for learners of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. Let’s dive deeper into what makes this app so remarkable.

Chapter 2: Why LingoDeer Stands Out

LingoDeer can be likened to a more tailored version of Duolingo, specifically designed for learning Asian languages. While I’ve briefly discussed LingoDeer in previous articles, I want to elaborate on its features that contribute to its effectiveness.

One of the standout aspects of LingoDeer is its structured learning path, which is essential for beginners.

Unlike Duolingo, which has undergone changes to its learning paths, LingoDeer maintains a consistent single pathway. This simplicity helps learners focus better on their studies. Additionally, LingoDeer avoids excessive repetition, a common pitfall in Duolingo, and offers helpful grammar tips.

Now let’s address the challenge of the Japanese alphabet. LingoDeer effectively covers this aspect by providing comprehensive lessons on pronunciation and character differentiation.

The app includes a well-organized chart that helps learners distinguish between different characters, complete with a convenient Hira/Kata switch for smooth transitions.

Furthermore, LingoDeer enriches its lessons by integrating stories, enhancing reading and listening comprehension. While Duolingo also features stories, the quality of LingoDeer’s graphics and content is truly superior.

Chapter 3: Language Offerings and Recommendations

So, which languages does LingoDeer provide?

While the European languages available on LingoDeer are well-crafted, I believe there are more cost-effective alternatives for those. However, when it comes to Asian languages like Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese, LingoDeer excels. Few other resources offer such an immersive experience for learning Thai and Vietnamese. I even recommended LingoDeer for Thai to a friend, and he’s been thoroughly enjoying it. The Vietnamese course is particularly impressive compared to other options I’ve encountered.

When it comes to Japanese, while there are other apps that may be cheaper, LingoDeer still delivers significant value. For Chinese and Korean, it truly stands out with minimal competition.

Chapter 4: Cost and Value

LingoDeer is priced slightly higher than some of its rivals, but the real question is whether it’s worth the investment. If you’re committed to learning Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, or Vietnamese, I believe it is indeed a worthwhile choice. I highly recommend the lifetime subscription, especially for those interested in Asian languages. Given that mastering Japanese typically takes more than a year, securing a lifetime subscription could be a smart move.
