Be Smarter Than Your Fears: Overcoming Phobias and Anxiety
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Fear
Fear can often feel overwhelming, almost as if it defines who we are. For many, the dictionary entry for "fear" could easily feature their own picture. Growing up, I was constantly gripped by anxiety.
Afraid of the dark. Afraid of insects. Afraid of speaking in front of others. Afraid of not being loved. Afraid of rejection. Afraid of inadequacy. Afraid of death.
The list goes on, spiraling into a whirlwind of dread.
I would invent the worst possible scenarios and become consumed by the thought that they could become reality. This cycle of fear would lead me to believe that one misstep or misinterpretation could bring my worst fears to life. My phobias loomed larger than life, attacking me at will, leaving me feeling powerless. All I could do was hope they wouldn’t destroy me.
I found myself in a toxic relationship with my fears. I tried to convince myself that it wasn’t as severe as it seemed, that things would improve with time, or that my fears would show compassion and leave me in peace. I thought if I behaved perfectly, my fears might let me off the hook.
Keeping my struggles to myself felt like the only option; sharing them would only fuel my phobias’ wrath.
Section 1.1: The Turning Point
But then, a shift occurred. I reached a breaking point of exhaustion from living in constant fear. There were so many experiences I yearned to embrace, yet I felt paralyzed by anxiety. In that moment, I felt a surge of anger towards myself.
Was this truly how I wished to live my life?
I resolved to outsmart my fears. Whenever that negative voice echoed in my mind, I began to counter it with rational arguments. I aimed to strip away their power over me!
You’ll forget your speech. You shouldn’t present!
I’ve rehearsed my speech numerous times; forgetting it is unlikely.
What if you do? You’ll embarrass yourself!
If that happens, I’ve prepared notes to guide me.
You won’t be able to read your notes! You’ll be too anxious!
If I feel overwhelmed, I’ll take a sip of water to buy myself a moment to collect my thoughts.
What if the power goes out? It’s dark now. What will you do?
I’ll simply use my phone to watch something lighthearted on YouTube while waiting for the lights to come back on.
What if it takes forever? You’ll be stuck in the dark, all alone!
I can call a friend or my sister; someone is bound to be available.
But they can’t come to you! You’ll be by yourself!
I can still chat on the phone. Talking passes the time quickly!
Section 1.2: Gaining Control
Remember, fear cannot exist in isolation. You have the power to reject it. If you continuously refuse to engage with your phobias, they will eventually take the hint and fade away.
Chapter 2: Facing Your Demons
In the video "Demons Are Smarter Than You," we explore how our fears can manipulate our thoughts and actions, often appearing more intelligent than they truly are. Understanding this dynamic is essential for reclaiming control over our lives.
The video "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grade Demon?" presents humorous insights into how we often underestimate our ability to outsmart our fears. By approaching our anxieties with a lighthearted perspective, we can begin to dismantle their power.
