Working and Living Abroad: 10 Essential Considerations

Written on

Chapter 1: The Allure of Working Abroad

Are you contemplating the idea of living and working in another country? For many, the motivation to work abroad stems from the belief that travel can greatly enhance their lives. The urge for adventure often drives us to seek out our personal paradise.

However, the concept of paradise varies widely among individuals. For some, it might be the serene countryside of Georgia, while for others, it could be the charming city of Valencia, Italy. Locations like Bali and Thailand remain popular among digital nomads due to their vibrant cultures and beautiful landscapes.

If you're dreaming of working and living abroad, you likely have a specific paradise in mind. Yet, it's crucial to recognize that a destination ideal for vacations may not be the best option for remote work. So, what does paradise mean to you?

Begin by creating a list of what matters most to you. Consider factors like climate, culture, access to nature, and entertainment. What do you treasure the most? What aspects of your current life would you miss if they were no longer available?

Take note of what frustrates you. Is it inefficiency, noise, or perhaps overcrowding? List all of these elements. With your insights in hand, here are ten key factors to contemplate:

  1. Dependable Internet Access

Most jobs today require some form of internet connectivity. For digital nomads managing online businesses, a fast and stable internet connection is non-negotiable. Regardless of the beauty of a location, avoid moving there without great internet service. It's better suited for a visit than for permanent living.

  2. Residency Regulations

Are you considering full-time residency or just a part of the year? Understanding the legal requirements for establishing residency is vital if you’re planning a long-term move. Many nations now offer special visas designed for digital nomads.

  3. Leisure Activities

How do you envision spending your free time? Do you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking or sailing, or are you more inclined toward cultural pursuits like art galleries and fine dining?

  4. Infrastructure Quality

Consider how crucial it is for you to have access to reliable infrastructure, including roads, public transportation, and banking services.

  1. Climate Preferences

Not everyone is drawn to endless sunshine and sandy beaches. Some individuals may find heat uncomfortable. Do you prefer a warm climate year-round, or would you enjoy experiencing all four seasons?

  2. Healthcare Availability

Access to good and affordable healthcare is one of the most critical yet often overlooked factors for digital nomads. Emergencies can happen, and being near reliable medical facilities is essential. Do you have specific health needs that could require immediate attention?

  3. Business Environment

If you plan to start more than just an online business, research the local business climate. Understanding regulations and labor costs is crucial for a smooth launch.

  4. Community Aspects

Would you rather live in a place with a substantial expatriate community, or are you excited about immersing yourself in the local culture?

  5. Language Considerations

Are you looking to relocate to a place where the locals speak your language, or does the prospect of learning a new language thrill you?

  6. Living Expenses

If you’re self-employed, the cost of living is a significant consideration, especially if you’re starting a business with limited savings.

Bringing It All Together

The prospect of living and working abroad is exhilarating. Five years ago, I embarked on a journey of part-time living, writing, and consulting abroad. I quickly realized that alongside a strong internet connection, warmth, community, and proximity to the beach were my primary concerns.

After traveling to several countries, I discovered my affinity for the Mediterranean, particularly Greece. The lifestyle there allows for easy travel throughout Europe.

As winter approaches, I spend my time in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where the internet is fast, and English is widely spoken, though I enjoy practicing my Spanish. The warm climate and the friendliness of the locals keep me content.
