Many are attempting to replicate their previous social media experiences despite recognizing the flaws in the corporate model. Their desire for a lively community, rapid growth, and broad acceptance leads them to believe that boosting is the solution. They think that reaching a critical mass will benefit everyone involved.

In essence, the process of cultivating an engaging feed within the Fediverse is entirely user-driven. Users retain complete authority over what they choose to see, who they follow, the significance of specific topics, and what is considered appropriate for public engagement.

This means there is no external influence, whether from individuals or algorithms, to assist you in your quest for entertainment. You must curate your experience manually, without a guiding algorithm suggesting posts based on your past behavior.

For many tech enthusiasts and early adopters, this self-reliance is a fundamental aspect of the experience. They prefer to take control themselves, akin to digital libertarians who assemble their computers from spare parts just for the fun of it.

Following that, an introductory post can help others discover you, including a few relevant hashtags like #introduction.

To make your feed more engaging, connect with at least 100 interesting accounts, as a sparse feed can feel deserted. With over 9 million users, a lively interaction is paramount. Initially, you may also wish to follow your local instance and activate the Federated stream to immerse yourself fully in the community.

Since your activity doesn’t directly influence your experience, liking a post simply acknowledges the author’s effort. Conversely, boosting a post allows it to reach a wider audience beyond your immediate connections. However, viral content is not a primary focus within the Fediverse culture.

Essentially, favoriting a post is a personal nod to the creator, while boosting is a way to share intriguing finds with your friends. Yet, there's more to this dynamic than meets the eye.

Balancing Your Feed with Intention

Your Home feed consists solely of the posts and boosts from those you follow, meaning its quality relies heavily on the content they share. If your connections mainly boost content, your feed may resemble an aggregator, cluttered with posts lacking depth.

The charm of the Mastodon community lies in connecting with like-minded individuals who share common interests. Most users seek genuine interaction rather than fleeting entertainment. Thus, a blend of personal and professional content, as well as original and shared ideas, is essential.

Feel free to share that adorable cat photo or breathtaking sunset alongside significant news articles. However, ensure that what you boost is genuinely valuable, as indiscriminately sharing content can overwhelm your followers with noise.

Utilizing tools to mute or filter out unwanted topics is a way to maintain a curated experience. The ultimate filter is blocking individuals whose posts you prefer to avoid, but you can also block their boosts. This allows you to appreciate someone's insights while disregarding their content-sharing habits.

It’s crucial for everyone to actively curate an engaging feed filled with thought-provoking and compassionate content. If you don’t contribute by boosting, you’re missing an opportunity to support others. Conversely, if boosting is your only activity, you’re not adding any personal flair.

Strive for balance and curiosity in your interactions, as being a discerning member of the community will enhance your reputation. So yes, boost that impactful post—the one that resonated with you after reading the entire article, not just the headline.
