A Humorous Approach to Detecting Lies: My CIA Daydream

Chapter 1: A Childhood Dream
One of my cherished memories from childhood is participating in "take your child to work day" at my father's job. Although he rarely discussed his work in front of my mother and brother, entering the CIA headquarters with him was nothing short of thrilling. I was fascinated by the idea of being a spy, and this experience only fueled my excitement.
After retrieving a large case from our F-150's trunk, we passed through security and descended into the basement. My father gestured for me to sit and then pulled out an intriguing device from his suitcase. “Stay calm, Matt. This won’t hurt—well, not too much,” he said as he attached several electrodes to my arms and began asking some rather daunting questions.
“Did you eat my chocolate cookies this morning?” he inquired.
I confidently replied "no," insisting that I would never do such a thing, even though the crumbs around my mouth suggested otherwise. After an awkward ten minutes of questioning, he fixed me with a serious gaze and declared, “This is a lie detector, Matt. I know you’re not being truthful.”
To my astonishment, I realized my father had effectively used a lie detector to elicit an honest answer. On the ride back to our expansive home, I resolved to employ this interrogation technique whenever I suspected someone of being dishonest.
Section 1.1: The Case of the Missing Pen
Not long after, a friend named Justin decided to play a prank by swiping my favorite pen during English class. He insisted he hadn’t taken it and claimed innocence. However, I was convinced he was lying. So, I invited him for a visit to my father's workplace.
I seated Justin in the basement and hooked him up to the lie detector. “Don’t worry, buddy. It won’t hurt—much,” I reassured him. After twenty minutes of persistent questioning, he eventually confessed to the theft of my beloved pen.
Some might argue that using a lie detector in a CIA-like setting is excessive, but I found it remarkably effective. With a grin, I left the room, satisfied that I had uncovered the truth.
