Chapter 1: My Fitness Journey Begins

From running and yoga to CrossFit and jumping rope, there are countless ways to stay active. The first step is identifying what brings you joy or at least the least resistance.

Welcome to my perspective on fitness, where my journey towards a healthier lifestyle commenced with a pivotal choice made long ago. It's fascinating how a decision made today can create a ripple effect for the future. My fitness adventure began at the YMCA, a fact I had forgotten until I started to write this. Initially, I was just using the elliptical or treadmill. A high school friend who worked there encouraged me to join her. For the first ten years, my focus was solely on cardio, avoiding the weight room where men congregated. When I switched to 24 Hour Fitness, I hired a trainer for three sessions to ease my transition into weightlifting. I started with weight machines and observed others, trying to gauge if I could replicate what they were doing without making a fool of myself. It’s funny how hard we can be on ourselves.

For many, this initial step feels overwhelming as we sift through an array of workout choices, search for the right gym, and navigate conflicting advice. It's crucial to explore the fitness landscape to find a program that resonates with you. Remember, only you can determine what suits you best.

Entering the fitness world can feel like stepping into an alien environment; everyone appears to be seasoned, while we feel conspicuous. However, this realm is brimming with opportunities for personal growth. Whether you choose to hit the gym, attend a yoga session, or jog in the park, there are myriad ways to stay active. The secret, which I might be revealing too soon, is to discover what you can commit to long-term. If bouncing on a trampoline, jogging, or practicing Pilates excites you, then pursue that path. It’s not solely about muscle building or weight loss; it's about enhancing our overall well-being and adopting a healthier lifestyle. This aspect of your life is vital—embrace what you enjoy and what fuels you.

Despite our best efforts, many of us fall prey to self-sabotage and negative self-talk regarding our workouts. We create excuses, procrastinate, and convince ourselves that we are too busy or fatigued to exercise. Often, the greatest hurdle in achieving our fitness goals is our own mindset. Every day is a fresh start. So what if you missed the last few days, weeks, or even months? Each new day offers the chance to recommit. If you only manage to work out for one day, that’s still progress. Maybe next time you’ll find the motivation for two consecutive workouts. The key is to begin somewhere. We engage in mental games, promising ourselves we’ll begin tomorrow or doubting our ability to see results. Fear and self-doubt can hinder our progress.

Alongside our internal battles, external pressures from family and friends can also impact our fitness journey. We’re constantly inundated with images of the so-called "ideal" body on social media and in advertisements, making us feel compelled to meet unrealistic beauty standards. Sometimes, people may suggest skipping a workout, claiming you look great. I recommend reflecting on what drives you. Will you feel like the best version of yourself if you skip your workout? If the answer is yes, that’s fine; if no, communicate your needs. These moments allow for self-reflection and advocacy for what aligns with your goals.

Ultimately, fitness is not about conforming to someone else's vision of perfection. It's about appreciating our unique bodies and celebrating what they can accomplish. Whether you are tall, short, curvy, or lean, there is no universal approach to fitness. What truly matters is how you feel physically and mentally. Remember that every journey starts with a single step, and every workout—regardless of size—brings you closer to your aspirations.

Chapter 2: Finding What Works for You

The first video, "How to Create the Perfect Workout Plan // Ultimate Guide," explores effective strategies for establishing a workout routine that suits your lifestyle.

My experiences have included chest/tricep and back/bicep split workouts, high-rep low-weight routines, and a six-day-a-week regimen that included weights followed by 30 minutes of cardio. CrossFit didn’t appeal to me due to its fast pace, which made me anxious about injury. I enjoy yoga, but it doesn't provide the level of intensity I seek. It wasn't until I tried the Booty by Bret program that I noticed significant changes in my body shape. While I lost weight with push/pull splits or attending spin classes twice a week, my body didn’t transform until I engaged in this particular program, which I elaborate on in another post.

Despite the hurdles we encounter, the advantages of regular exercise are irrefutable. Not only does it enhance our physical health, but it also offers long-term benefits for our mental and emotional well-being. Research indicates that women who start exercising at a young age are more likely to maintain that habit over time. Additionally, studies show that women who engage in regular physical activity are less prone to chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Exercise also alleviates stress, enhances sleep quality, and elevates overall mood and confidence.

So when you’re ready to take that initial step—whether on the mat, bike, or pavement—keep this in mind: You possess more potential than you realize. As David Goggins aptly puts it, we typically only utilize about 40% of our capacity, leaving 60% untapped. When I find myself struggling through a workout and yearning for my bed, I remind myself that I still have 60% more to give. Don’t let self-doubt or external expectations deter you from your objectives. Embrace the journey and discover the incredible capabilities of your body. Ultimately, the only workout you'll regret is the one you chose not to do. Sometimes, I approach the gym with the mindset of completing just one exercise. That's still an improvement. After that set, I reassess my energy and often find I’m capable of more. I've never left the gym wishing I hadn’t gone, which is a crucial motivator for me to keep returning.
