Finding Fulfillment Beyond Basic Needs: A Path to Satisfaction
Written on
Chapter 1: The Pursuit of More
It's perfectly acceptable to desire more vacations, leisure time, and overall happiness in your life. My spouse and I often engaged in discussions about this. I used to think she was being overly ambitious for wanting additional fulfillment when we already had a comfortable life.
While it's true that, compared to many in developing nations, we are quite fortunate, it doesn’t invalidate her feelings or yours.
Where It All Begins
Many people are misled into believing that attending college guarantees job security and greater success than what their parents experienced. Since our parents faced challenges without a college degree, they often encouraged us to pursue higher education as the best route to a stable future.
This notion is prevalent; my students frequently insist on the necessity of college, believing it to be the sole path to success. Some indeed find their calling and secure jobs in their fields. However, a staggering 34% of college graduates are employed in roles that don't require a degree, and another 40% face unemployment.
Even if you belong to the fortunate few, you might still find life lacking. For instance, my friend earns a substantial income yet feels unfulfilled, realizing that the relentless pursuit of wealth isn’t as rewarding as it seems.
We crave satisfaction beyond our daily responsibilities and grades; life needs to offer more.
Acknowledging a Vital Truth
In conversations with my wife, I initially thought she needed to cultivate a sense of gratitude. For me, prayer and reflection provide comfort and clarity on my journey. While I don't dismiss the importance of gratitude—it's essential to appreciate what you have in order to welcome more into your life—simply having your needs met doesn’t guarantee true satisfaction.
Receiving basic comforts like food and shelter doesn’t evoke the sentiment of “I’d be content to leave this world tomorrow.”
So, it’s entirely valid to desire more from life—and you absolutely should.
Discovering the Missing Element
Reflecting on my lucrative friend who feels a void and my wife who, despite having enough, remains discontent, I've come to realize that life encompasses more than just paying bills. The elusive element seems to be passion.
We require activities beyond mindlessly scrolling through social media or binge-watching shows. Is it possible to be passionate about anime while contributing creatively online? Certainly! This brings us to an important concept.
Are you creating or merely consuming? Jenna Kutcher, an entrepreneur, podcaster, and bestselling author, emphasizes the importance of creation. Engaging in creative endeavors gives life purpose and motivation, especially during challenging times.
This principle resonates on a deeper level, prompting us to reflect: What legacy do I want to leave? How do I want to be remembered? And how can I carve out time each day or weekend to pursue that vision?
My initial conflict with my wife stemmed from a narrow financial perspective. The personal finance community often suggests that once your basic needs are met, further desires should be curtailed. However, this mindset overlooks the essence of enjoyment—fun.
Without passion and joy, we simply exist, marking time on this planet. Life can feel bleak without moments of brightness, and nobody wants to endure that.
Key Insight: Infuse your life with joy by pursuing more than just the essentials. We are meant to live fully, not let life slip away unnoticed.
