Embracing Simplicity: A Journey Towards Less Stress
Written on
Chapter 1: The Cycle of Overwhelm
I’m weary of putting in maximum effort only to yield minimal results. It’s time to shift my focus from doing more to achieving more with less.
As I reflect on my experiences, I've realized that I often fall into an exhausting loop of “overwhelm, burnout, recovery, and repeat.”
This pattern stems primarily from my tendency to overload my daily agenda. It typically begins when I notice a relatively open schedule, which I mistakenly interpret as an invitation to fill it up. This is where I go wrong.
Next, I glance at my to-do list, which is often cluttered with trivial tasks, and choose something to squeeze into my already busy day. Once again, I convince myself that I can manage it, and this leads to yet another error.
I tackle the new task, only to find myself adding even more responsibilities to my day. This cycle continues daily until I feel completely drained—emotionally, physically, and mentally. This marks my third misstep.
A persistent voice in my head urges me to keep pushing for more. This pressure is influenced by society’s relentless “hustle and grind” mentality, which I tend to adopt without question.
Now, however, I’m exhausted. I yearn for a transformation that embraces a simpler lifestyle.
I aim to eliminate all that is superfluous in my life. This means focusing on what is truly essential—cherishing moments with friends and family, and taking time to relax.
I also recognize that tasks contributing to my genuine goals are vital. Yet, I’m ready to let go of activities that fail to bring joy, progress, or any substantial value. These could be anything from a burdensome task on my to-do list, an unhealthy relationship, or even that so-called “downtime” that ends up adding to my stress.
My goal is to simplify my life, but this endeavor is not without its challenges. I have an extensive list of tasks to tackle, and I will sift through it to identify what can be deemed a “not-to-do.”
Determining how to utilize the time I’ve freed up remains a puzzle I need to solve. However, I’m committed to figuring it out.
“Perfection is not when there is no more to add, but no more to take away.” ~ Antoine De Saint-Exupery
