Much later in my life, I decided to heed advice that I believe originated from Oprah Winfrey. Though she didn’t personally impart it to me, her emphasis on gratitude journals has resonated with many over the years. Initially, I dismissed the idea; I considered myself inherently positive and felt I didn’t require a dedicated practice to acknowledge my blessings.
Yet, it's often those just a step ahead who can provide the most relatable guidance. Two years ago, during a casual listen to my favorite podcast, “OOPS the Podcast,” hosted by comedians Francis Ellis and Guilio Gallarotte, I stumbled upon a compelling discussion. They usually blend humor with real-life topics, making their insights both entertaining and enlightening.
In one particular episode, Ellis shared his experience with a gratitude journal. As I listened, I recognized his struggles mirrored my own; like many, he faced anxieties about finances, relationships, and health. His journal routine involved jotting down two things he was thankful for and one way to improve his day. His reflection on this practice revealed that it was significantly impacting his life.
Hearing about his experiences inspired me to give a gratitude journal a shot. It’s often more relatable to learn from someone who shares similar challenges than from highly successful figures like Oprah.
Section 1.1: The Simplicity of Gratitude Journaling
A gratitude journal doesn’t have to be complicated. On that day, I decided to change my life. The simplicity of Ellis’s method appealed to me; my previous notions of journaling involved lengthy reflections and emotional exploration. However, his approach was far more accessible.
At the time, I was already maintaining a Bullet Journal to manage my tasks. Additionally, I had developed a daily writing routine through a program called Ship 30 for 30. The idea of recording just three sentences of gratitude seemed manageable. If I could write essays, surely I could spend five minutes on this.
I quickly incorporated two gratitude statements and one intention for a great day into my journal, writing the first thoughts that came to mind. This new practice took less than five minutes, and I immediately felt the benefits of expressing gratitude daily.
In the video "Give Thanks: An Attitude of Gratitude // Andy Stanley," the speaker delves into the importance of gratitude and how it can shift our mindset, much like my own experience with journaling.
Section 1.2: The Impact of Daily Gratitude
Thirty days after I began my gratitude journey, I faced significant stress during my 41st year as an educator. The challenges of transitioning from virtual to in-person teaching in 2021, compounded by learning new data systems, weighed heavily on me. Yet, my daily gratitude practice provided a constant reminder of the positive aspects of my life.
With each passing day, I found myself increasingly aware of the small joys around me. I began to actively seek out the positive rather than dwell on the uncontrollable negatives. It became clear to me that everyone could benefit from journaling their gratitude, and I was finally doing it myself.
My colleagues began to notice a shift in my demeanor. I was more cheerful and less burdened by stress. Perhaps my gratitude journal arrived at the perfect moment in my life.
Chapter 2: The Lasting Effects of Gratitude Journaling
My daily four-minute gratitude ritual changed my outlook entirely. After over a year of this practice, I often reflect on how I wish I had started journaling my gratitude years ago when I first heard Oprah mention it.
In the video "The Four A's for Expressing Gratitude," the speaker outlines practical strategies for expressing gratitude, echoing the principles I embraced in my own journaling journey.
