The Dangers of Trying to Change Your True Self

Written on

Chapter 1: The Fable of The Raven and The Swan

The tale of "The Raven and the Swan," a fable by Aesop, serves as a poignant reminder that merely changing your actions does not transform your essence. Pursuing an identity that doesn't align with your true self often results in a disconnect with reality.

In today's digital landscape, countless messages encourage us to modify fundamental aspects of our identities. This can foster feelings of envy and jealousy, overshadowing the unique beauty each individual possesses.

Section 1.1: The Tale Unfolds

In this story, a raven, with its dark feathers, longs to embody the elegance of a swan. Consumed by envy, it attempts to imitate the swan’s behavior—swimming, diving, and foraging in the water. Despite these efforts, the raven's feathers remain unchanged, and it ultimately fails in its quest, leading to its demise.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Lesson

"A change of habits will not alter nature." — Aesop

This fable teaches us to embrace our unique qualities. No matter how much we may envy others, merely acting differently will not alter our intrinsic nature. While personal growth is possible, it's essential to recognize that certain traits remain constant. For example, someone who is naturally short cannot simply wish to grow taller.

Fighting against your natural inclinations often leads to inner conflict, as I discovered when struggling with my own neurotic tendencies. Acceptance of these traits can pave the way for a more harmonious life.

Chapter 2: The Influence of Modern Media

In today’s society, platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube perpetuate the idea of altering appearances through filters and editing tools. Many individuals conceal their true selves behind artificial personas, often resorting to cosmetic enhancements.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there was a significant increase in cosmetic procedures in 2022, with breast reconstructions up 12%, breast reductions soaring by 54%, Botox injections increasing by 73%, and fillers rising by 70%.

The relentless pursuit of what we envy can lead to detrimental consequences, particularly for young girls who often scrutinize their bodies. I recall wishing for different physical attributes—wider hips, straighter hair, or a shorter stature. Without stories like "The Raven and the Swan" to remind us of the importance of self-acceptance, we risk veering further into an unhealthy quest for change.

Section 2.1: Embracing Authenticity

The raven’s desire to mimic the swan ultimately resulted in its downfall. While we may not have a manual for a fulfilling life, timeless tales such as "The Raven and the Swan" provide guidance for our moral compass.

Consider your own experiences: in what ways might you be emulating the raven? Who or what represents the swan in your life? It’s essential to differentiate between admiration and envy. Striving to become something you are not can feel disconcerting. While self-improvement is commendable, it’s crucial to remain aware of your true nature.

Accept yourself as you are, recognizing what is within your power to change.
