Beyond a mere list of fixes, this patch lays the foundation for the upcoming DLC and brings the game up to date with modern hardware, leaving behind older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. More importantly, nearly every gameplay mechanic has been reworked.

This is one of those rare instances where the phrase “it feels like a new game” genuinely applies. Although the main storyline and many graphical elements remain unchanged, virtually every aspect of gameplay has undergone significant revisions. For instance, loot mechanics have been dramatically altered, with armor now deriving from cybernetic enhancements rather than clothing. The skill tree has been completely revamped, introducing abilities that were once hinted at in marketing but never made it into the initial release three years ago. Instead of merely earning incremental upgrades, players will now acquire entirely new abilities as they invest in skills. Combat pacing has slowed, requiring thoughtful engagement with stamina management alongside limited healing options.

The result is a more refined gaming experience that can proudly stand alongside other remarkable RPGs released this year. This is an ideal moment to dive into or revisit Cyberpunk 2077.

Here are my top three favorite changes after several hours of gameplay.

Section 1.1: Streamlined Loot Mechanics

Interestingly, I've often praised loot-heavy games, including Starfield, for their abundance of collectible items. So, am I really advocating for a reduction in loot within Cyberpunk? Yes, without a doubt.

Previously, Cyberpunk’s environment was cluttered with clothing, weapons, and various items, especially following intense combat encounters. The rhythm often devolved into a cycle of frantic gunfights followed by tedious looting.

Now, the game emphasizes its core mechanics, which have been thoroughly overhauled, shifting focus away from loot collection. While weapons and clothing can still be found, their numbers are significantly reduced. The elimination of armor bonuses from clothing means players can dress for style rather than stats, freeing them from the burden of constantly comparing items.

Weapon comparisons are now presented more thoughtfully, showcasing a broader range of stats on the item screen rather than just a single damage figure. The crafting and upgrading system has become more intuitive, allowing players to stick with their preferred gear without constantly searching for better options. Healing items now operate on a cooldown, simplifying management and enhancing combat balance.

On consoles, the previously common action of quickly highlighting loot has been replaced with a quick melee attack. While the option to scan for items still exists, it’s no longer essential.

Character customization in Cyberpunk 2077

Section 1.2: Enhanced Character Build Diversity

From the very first skill point, characters now exhibit markedly different abilities. In the older version, skills were primarily linear bonuses that enhanced specific attributes, but in the 2.0 update, each skill now translates into tangible gameplay mechanics. Players can run faster, dodge attacks, block bullets with melee weapons, and gain new targeting capabilities with ranged weapons. This change greatly diversifies character experiences, especially in the early game.

Previously, the best strategy involved pouring points into preferred weapon types, but now players can create varied character types for richer role-playing. Special dialogue options are now directly tied to core stats, enhancing gameplay differentiation as players progress.

The absence of armor bonuses from clothing encourages players to engage with the Cyberware system, which introduces its own set of benefits and challenges alongside skill management. This feels like the game that should have been released initially; it now represents a true RPG experience rather than just an action game.

Dynamic combat in Cyberpunk 2077

Chapter 2: Combat System Overhaul

Combat has also seen significant improvements, even from the very first mission. Enemies now utilize cover effectively and display a wider array of tactics. Each action in combat depletes stamina, necessitating smarter decisions to maintain optimal damage output. This subtle slowdown in combat pace introduces a hint of tactical depth reminiscent of traditional tabletop RPGs.

Hacking capabilities are also more effective, with abilities activating more rapidly and featuring shorter cooldowns for players who invest in those skills. While the original game had enjoyable shooting mechanics, the frenetic pace felt generic. The new system adds personality to the combat, making it more engaging and strategic.

Is it odd that firing a weapon reduces my character’s stamina? Perhaps, but this mechanic adds a layer of strategy that enhances the overall experience.

Final Thoughts

Engaging with this patch has reignited my enthusiasm to explore Phantom Liberty in the coming days. After countless hours in Starfield, I didn't expect to be drawn back into a game like Cyberpunk, but the updates have made it compelling enough to see through to completion.

The previous version of Cyberpunk was solid, but I never anticipated that CD Projekt would undertake such a comprehensive overhaul. This level of reworking is quite rare in the gaming industry, but the outcome is impressive.

I recently spotted an old strategy guide for the game, which seems almost irrelevant now due to the extensive changes in core systems and combat pacing.

Cyberpunk has been enjoyable for some time, but this latest update elevates it to new heights through innovative gameplay mechanics. The game now possesses unique elements that help it stand apart from other first-person looter-shooter RPGs, and I believe it will only attract a larger audience moving forward.

Visually, it remains one of the most stunning games available, further enhanced by its focus on current hardware. While I’m saddened that CD Projekt is moving towards Unreal Engine, this update demonstrates their capability to maximize their own engine’s potential.

The name "2.0" perfectly encapsulates this patch. Few games have undergone such a radical reinvention; Final Fantasy XIV is one notable example. This update sets a high standard that I doubt many others will replicate, as it’s unreasonable to expect continual iterations on gameplay mechanics. Nonetheless, it is undeniably remarkable!
