COVID Response in Vanuatu: Testing Challenges and Community Support

Chapter 1: Testing Challenges in Vanuatu
The day has been long, and I can only imagine the emotional toll on healthcare professionals. While I return to the comfort of my home each night, many health workers face the anxiety of their families concerning the virus. Some are even distancing themselves from loved ones, opting to sleep outside to mitigate any risks.
Throughout Port Vila and Santo, communities are taking measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by isolating themselves. Testing efforts are increasing, yet fewer individuals seem willing to participate.
Earlier today, while filming by the waterfront, I noticed a convoy of vehicles approaching with flashing lights, projecting a sense of urgency. Inside were several women donning masks. Suddenly, “Simon from Health” emerged, shouting for people to maintain a distance of at least 20 meters. However, that distance was soon deemed insufficient, as he insisted on an even greater separation, all while threatening me with arrest for merely filming the scene.
I would urge Simon to reconsider his approach; such aggressive tactics may not foster trust or cooperation during these tense times.
"Only a few tests were administered during this period," is how the situation was described. While it was a weekend, I can't help but wonder if the fear of being forcibly quarantined after a positive test result is discouraging people from coming forward.
I don’t mean to sound overly dramatic, but the idea of being taken away for mandatory isolation is not how I envision recovering from COVID-19. I recognize the necessity behind the health protocols, especially for those living in crowded conditions, yet it seems the authorities may have an image problem to address.
Despite these challenges, there have been commendable developments worth celebrating. The Ministry of Health reached out to the Vanuatu Business Resilience Council, which in turn mobilized the local business sector for assistance.
In a remarkably short time, generous contributions aimed at assisting those in quarantine began to arrive. Supplies such as hygiene products, reading materials, and fresh drinking water were among the first items collected. I plan to donate my Scrabble board tomorrow; it's a great start, regardless of size.
Thanks to the reduced traffic, I was able to accomplish something I never thought possible during regular times: flying my drone over Port Vila.
