Chapter 1: The Power of Small Habits
For many of us, setting lofty goals at the start of each year is a common practice to inspire self-improvement. Personally, I've dedicated nearly a decade to powerlifting and weight training, consistently aiming for ambitious milestones in the gym. This approach has motivated me, and even if I didn't meet these goals, I found satisfaction in the progress I made along the way.
However, I found it perplexing that I struggled to apply this same mindset to other aspects of my life. What was it that drove my consistent visits to the gym? Why was I targeting goals that ultimately didn’t resonate with me?
Last winter, I came across a summary of "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. In it, he emphasized the significance of establishing small, manageable habits over merely chasing big goals. These tiny habits can accumulate, resulting in substantial and meaningful transformations in our lives.
This insight helped me recognize that I had, in fact, established a system of habits for my workouts. Going to the gym had become a seamless part of my routine, requiring minimal effort. My focus shifted from merely reaching certain targets to appreciating the progress I was making. It dawned on me that the journey of improvement was far more valuable than simply attaining the end goal.
I have since begun to adopt this philosophy in other areas of my life. For instance, when I launched my YouTube channel at the beginning of last year, I initially set a specific subscriber count as my goal for the year. This mindset proved to be unsustainable, so I transitioned to creating a habit system centered around my YouTube efforts. Regardless of the channel's statistics, prioritizing my commitment to "showing up" became my primary focus.
While it's natural to share your ambitious goals with others, it’s essential to take a step back and concentrate on nurturing a foundation of small habits. These habits are akin to compound interest in the realm of self-improvement, and over time, the rewards will be substantial.
