Accessories to Enhance Your Filmmaking
To get started, investing in a few essential accessories is crucial. The first must-have is an SSD. Apple highlighted at their September event that large ProRes files can be recorded directly to an external SSD, minimizing the need for costly storage upgrades. I opted for a 1TB Samsung T7 drive, which pairs well with the iPhone's USB-C 3 port.
Additionally, a sturdy cage is necessary for stabilizing your setup. I went with a model from Neewer, which offers multiple mounting points for microphones and other accessories. Another accessory that I find incredibly useful is a 40 Gb/s L-shaped USB-C mount. This helps avoid cable clutter in the cage.
To further expand my options, I bought an Anker hub, allowing me to connect various devices, including a microphone and a monitor. This hub also provides power to the iPhone, ensuring that you won’t run out of battery mid-shoot.
Getting Started with Filmmaking
Now that your hardware is set up, it’s time to dive in and start filming. The Blackmagic app has proven to be an invaluable tool. While the native camera app has limited features, the Blackmagic app unlocks the full capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is why Apple utilized it during their event.
Once your SSD is connected, launch the Blackmagic app. Initially, it may appear overwhelming, but I’ll guide you through the settings that have worked best for me.
Start by selecting the main 24mm lens for optimal results. I prefer to shoot at 24 FPS, but the app allows for various frame rates. Adjust the shutter speed to 180 degrees, which simplifies the process when switching between frame rates. Note that the f-stop remains fixed at f1.8, so you won’t have that flexibility.
ISO settings can be tricky. Initially, I mirrored my Canon 90D settings, but I found they didn’t translate well to the iPhone. After multiple attempts, I discovered that reducing the key light intensity significantly improved my results. For example, I usually shoot at 100% brightness with my Canon, but for the iPhone, I reduced it to around 30-35%.
A simple white card or piece of paper can help with white balance. I keep the auto white balance setting locked and use grid lines to frame my shots effectively.
