Understanding and Coping with Excessive Sweating: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: Living with Hyperhidrosis
In my life, I have experienced excessive sweating, particularly from my palms and soles, since childhood. This condition became apparent when I was in school, as my notebooks would often become damp. Now, my 4-year-old daughter has inherited this issue, having been affected since infancy, which suggests it may be congenital.
Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for this condition. Over the years, I've adapted by carrying a handkerchief to manage the sweat. Despite this challenge, I have pursued my passion for the arts and even earned a PhD in Microbiology, a field where hygiene is crucial.
While I had a basic understanding of treatment options, financial constraints limited my ability to explore them. However, after the advent of the internet in 2007, I discovered a wealth of information about hyperhidrosis. I learned that it can be linked to thyroid disorders, overactive sympathetic nerves, and even trauma experienced at any stage of life.
I have witnessed firsthand how trauma can trigger hyperhidrosis later in life. A friend shared that he began to sweat excessively after suffering a fall and undergoing elbow surgery. Now at 41, I find the reality of living with hyperhidrosis to be quite challenging. Fortunately, my career does not involve acting, athletics, or medicine, where my sweaty hands would be a significant disadvantage.
In a previous article, I recounted my experience with nitrile gloves, which caused rashes that almost led me to quit my job. Coping with hyperhidrosis involves a mixture of frustration, tolerance, and adaptation.
As I compose this piece, I am wearing cotton gloves. While I don’t wear them all the time, they are necessary today due to the excessive sweating making my keyboard messy. I wear absorbent socks every day, removing them only at night. If I skip wearing them, my damp feet can lead to discomfort from carpet chemicals and potential mold growth, damaging both my carpet and wood floors. Leather shoes are simply not an option for me.
Despite these struggles, I refuse to dwell on my limitations or blame my parents. Instead, I actively seek affordable solutions that allow me to maintain my productivity, which in turn bolsters my self-worth. If you're grappling with this condition, I hope my experiences resonate with you. Please feel free to share your story as well.
