# Understanding ADHD: Overcoming Procrastination with Metastructure
Written on
Chapter 1: The Challenge of Procrastination
Procrastination has always been a significant hurdle for me, especially in relation to my ADHD. It's something I've dealt with throughout my life, and I'll share my personal insights on what it means to me. The crucial aspect is that as long as I maintain my metastructure, procrastination becomes a minor issue that I can overcome.
Key Takeaway: Remember that a metastructure enables me to return to my routine, no matter if I'm distracted, bored, or feeling overwhelmed. A true metastructure is always there to guide you back.
My metastructure consists of various visual reminders in my surroundings, an organized layout of apps on my phone that keeps my notes in sight, and checklists that I keep both digitally and physically in my space. I embody my structure; it's part of my daily experience. For instance, the wall next to my bed is adorned with sticky notes containing my personal insights and motivational phrases.
During my lunch break, I find myself writing instead of eating, bending the rules of traditional breaks. Who will judge me for using my time as I wish, especially since I work remotely? I'm incredibly thankful for the flexibility to manage my time in a way that suits me.
Yet, when I take my lunch break and have already eaten, I still feel guilty about procrastination. Why? Because I'm not following my checklist; I'm straying from my established structure.
Let me emphasize how important sticky notes are in my system. If you have ADHD, you might relate: you write down tasks thinking that just writing them guarantees action, but then you get sidetracked.
Stop and Reflect: I need to hold myself accountable and at least complete one task from my list.
Engage in One Action: The concept of DALT (Do At Least This) comes into play. Finding a way to channel your DALTs can significantly boost your productivity.
This approach can also inspire you to implement the 15–10–5–1–1–5–10–15 method for productivity management, which I will elaborate on later.
Seek your metastructure, nurture it, and create a system of consistent reminders to ignite your creative drive. Test it by ensuring you can repeatedly accomplish your DALTs.
This is all I wanted to cover for now. Back to work! For those who might be wondering, my primary obstacle is losing sight of my sticky notes, while my main solution lies in my metastructure.
