Transforming Perspectives on Aging: Embracing Vitality and Change

Understanding Ageism
During a rare outing with my husband in Ocho Rios, we savored some delicious, locally sourced cuisine. This occasion was special, not just because we were dining out, but due to our shared passion for cooking at home. As an American, I often see how many of us consume processed foods. By the way, if you're ever in Jamaica, I highly recommend The Summer House for a fantastic meal.
Ageism is a pervasive issue that affects us all, regardless of our age. Whether you find yourself as a target or a contributor to ageism, it's crucial to acknowledge its impact. If you’re not part of the problem, I hope you’re actively seeking solutions to mitigate this waste of human potential. As I’ve mentioned in my previous article, "Get This It Ain’t Going Away," we must collectively confront the costly dilemma of ageism, which has been shown to burden our healthcare system by a staggering $6.3 billion.
Becca Levy, Ph.D., conducted an extensive study on Americans aged 50 and older, revealing concerning trends over a 25-year period. You can find her comprehensive research here.
The catalyst for this discussion came from a recent Quora blog post that I stumbled upon. The overwhelming negativity surrounding aging reignited my passion for this topic. As I browsed, I noticed numerous posts filled with complaints about aging and its associated challenges.
Classic grievances included:
- Mortgage issues
- Chronic pain
- Feelings of loneliness
- Gray hair
- Wrinkles
- Bad luck
- Low energy
One individual remarked that the supposed glory of "Golden Years" felt like mere "spin." I completely understand this sentiment, as writing often involves weaving narratives.
Marshall McLuhan famously noted in "The Extensions of Man" that "The Medium is the Message." In our youth-obsessed culture, there are far more negative portrayals of aging than positive ones. Whether it’s jokes about older individuals or dismissive comments about their struggles with technology, these messages contribute to a pervasive belief that older adults are undervalued.
A national poll by the University of Michigan found that a staggering 93% of older Americans experience some form of discrimination daily. It’s time to halt this negative narrative.
The Reality of Aging
Negative attitudes toward aging, whether from younger generations or older individuals themselves, have detrimental effects, including:
- Cognitive decline
- Poor physical health
- Reduced lifespan
Conversely, fostering positive feelings about aging can lead to a remarkable increase in life expectancy—averaging an additional 7.5 years—while also cultivating a more compassionate and joyful society.
Let’s examine some common complaints and how they can be reframed:
- Mortgage: This is a decision you've made. If you find yourself still managing a mortgage in retirement, take it one step at a time. Consider increasing your payments if possible, and remember that enjoying your home is worth any burdens.
- Gray Hair: Embrace the natural progression of aging. My own hair has transitioned to a mix of salt and pepper, and while I’ve encountered unexpected gray hairs elsewhere, it’s all part of the journey. If you prefer, dye your hair, but remember, it’s a personal choice.
- Wrinkles: With age comes the inevitable appearance of wrinkles. Rather than avoid joy and laughter, embrace them! Life is too short not to smile and enjoy it.
- Pain: Pain is a reality for many, regardless of age. Movement is crucial; it alleviates pain and enhances well-being. Incorporate gentle exercises like Tai Chi or yoga to promote vitality.
- Energy: Some find vitality through supplements, while I prefer natural sources like mushroom extracts and Irish Moss for their health benefits.
- Luck: Remember, we create our own luck through our choices and the company we keep. Surround yourself with positivity.
- Loneliness: If you feel isolated, reach out to friends and family. Positivity is contagious, and a friendly voice can uplift spirits.

Cultivating Vitality
Reflect on the complaints you resonate with and determine actionable steps to address them. If you identify with the issues above, take small, manageable steps to effect change. Keep a journal to document your progress and feelings about aging.
Remember, we’re all in this together. If we shift our perspective on aging, we could potentially save a significant portion of the $6.3 billion spent in 2020 on age-related healthcare. Imagine the positive impact we could have on our environment and communities by collaborating across generations.
