Revolutionary Saliva Test for COVID-19 from Yale Researchers
Written on
Introduction to SalivaDirect
A novel saliva-based test for COVID-19, created by researchers at Yale University, has recently obtained emergency authorization from the FDA. This test is not patented, allowing its methodology to be freely accessible for other laboratories. The protocol has been cross-validated with reagents from various manufacturers, ensuring that many labs can implement this test without being dependent on a single supplier, thus avoiding potential shortages.
The Advantages of Saliva Testing
This test stands out as it is less invasive, utilizing saliva to detect the presence of COVID-19. It is designed to be faster and simpler to administer, contributing to shorter turnaround times and minimizing human error. Remarkably, the total cost of reagents needed for a single test is approximately $10 USD!
Yale's Significant Findings
Researchers have discovered that the genetic material from the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains stable for extended periods at room temperature when suspended in saliva. This genetic material is encased in a lipid and protein layer, which allows it to infiltrate human cells. Once inside, it commandeers the host's cellular machinery to replicate.
In saliva, however, the virus remains stable and non-replicative for a duration of 2 to 25 days, providing a reliable snapshot of viral load. Therefore, there is no need for costly reagents to stabilize the viral genetic material, streamlining the testing process.
While the findings are still awaiting peer review, the data and methodologies presented on a preprint server were robust enough to secure emergency approval, promoting affordable and extensive testing. In fact, results from saliva samples matched those from oral-nasal swabs over 94% of the time. This test was validated in a cohort of asymptomatic NBA players, contributing to a secure environment for their games in Orlando through strict testing and isolation protocols.
This rapid, non-invasive testing method is essential for enabling widespread testing, which will be crucial in preventing future outbreaks.
