Many who have followed my opinions closely might chuckle at this statement. I've been quite vocal about my belief that smartwatches can be a poor investment. However, I've noticed the Apple Watch becoming increasingly popular among friends and colleagues, solidifying Apple's dominance in the smartwatch arena.
Despite my preference for traditional watches due to their buying experience, timeless aesthetics, minimal depreciation, and emotional significance, I found myself purchasing an Apple Watch last year. Although I don’t wear it daily, I still view wristwatches as accessories that reflect personal style, while the Apple Watch seems rather generic, merely indicating ownership of an iPhone.
But if I hold such reservations, what prompted my purchase? Here are my reasons:
Section 1.1: Embracing a Healthier Lifestyle
In April, I committed to improving my health. I quit smoking, started exercising regularly, and aimed to walk for an hour or two around my neighborhood when the weather permits. I sought an activity tracker to keep my goals front and center, and ultimately chose the Apple Watch.
Surprisingly, the Apple Watch encourages a more active lifestyle. It doesn’t constantly nag you but gently prompts you to stand and move, making the daily goal of closing activity rings a part of my routine.
I was particularly attracted to Apple's subscription service, "Apple Fitness+," which offers a plethora of workout options. The curated playlists designed for various fitness goals are incredibly appealing. Here are just a few examples of the available collections:
- Level Up Your Core Training
- 6 Weeks to Restart Your Fitness
- Run Your First 5K
- Strengthen and Stretch Your Back and Hips
Additionally, Apple Fitness+ includes meditation and specialized workout programs. One of my favorite features is the Time to Run and Time to Walk podcasts, where global celebrities share stories while you exercise. Notable figures like Naomi Campbell, Nick Jonas, Prince William, and Jamie Oliver have contributed episodes, making it a unique experience.
The combination of the Apple Watch and Fitness+ has motivated me to stay active, whether at home, outdoors, or in the gym. With the Focus Mode feature in iOS, I can customize my Watch Face for different activities, eliminating clutter from a single display.
Section 1.2: The Unmatched Data Presentation
When it comes to smartwatches, the Apple Watch stands out significantly. While other devices may excel in specific areas, the Apple Watch serves as a comprehensive option for the general public, far surpassing its competitors.
Not only is it highly accurate, but Apple excels at presenting data in an accessible manner. As I explored various activity trackers, I was impressed by how well Apple displayed the collected metrics. With just a glance, I can view my heart rate, recovery stats post-exercise, and cardio fitness level, all presented in a visually appealing format.
The Apple Watch doesn’t just gather data; it showcases it beautifully—something that cannot be said for other smartwatches.
Subsection 1.2.1: Classic Timepieces Still Hold My Heart
While I admire the Apple Watch for its capabilities, I still regard it as a utility rather than my primary timepiece. Classic watches are integral to my style and I enjoy collecting them.
I wear my Apple Watch primarily during long walks or workouts, but for any other occasion, I prefer a traditional watch.
Chapter 2: Acknowledging the Apple Watch's Brilliance
Despite my fondness for classic timepieces, I must acknowledge the Apple Watch's remarkable technology. There are countless features yet to explore, including the blood oxygen sensor, sleep tracking, fall detection, and more.
