# Lessons from a Security Incident: The Importance of Caution

Chapter 1: A Glimpse into Security Protocols
In my earlier days during the 1980s, while serving in the Royal Air Force Police in Germany, I was responsible for a vast area of 500 square kilometers that included both military residences and civilian roads. It's worth noting that I now identify with the so-called "new 40s," so let's not dwell on age or how youthful I feel!
At that time, the threat from the IRA was palpable and part of our daily routine. We utilized specialized military mirrors to inspect vehicles for potential explosives, a precaution as automatic as fastening a seatbelt. Reports of suspicious activities, particularly those involving Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), were frequent occurrences.
A typical day on duty often included calls about abandoned briefcases or bags left unattended near military facilities, raising immediate concerns.
One evening, while on patrol, my partner and I were directed to investigate a vehicle parked close to the main base's perimeter. It was a VW Camper van, dark and seemingly unoccupied.
Upon running a license plate check through the German police system, we discovered it was registered to a red Toyota. That discrepancy heightened our alertness. We promptly informed the German authorities of the situation and described the green VW Camper van. They quickly mobilized a team of officers, equipped with additional firepower, to handle the situation.
Suddenly, our seemingly dormant vehicle became the focus of an overwhelming response from armed personnel, all ready to exercise "reasonable force" if necessary. Anticipating possible chaos, I spoke with the incident commander and suggested they double-check the plate. Although he hesitated, likely feeling it undermined his team's competence, he ultimately complied.
As the minutes dragged on, tension filled the air. I could sense that everyone present was mentally reviewing their "Rules of Engagement." Then, a radio crackled with an update just out of my hearing range.
The commander’s discomfort was evident as we inquired about the status. It turned out that the operator had made a mistake; the plate actually belonged to the vehicle we were observing!
In light of this revelation, our approach shifted. The German police decided to approach the van and check for occupants. After a firm knock, a very elderly couple emerged, bewildered and startled to find themselves surrounded by ten armed German officers and two RAF personnel, all visibly relieved.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
This mantra applies to anyone, whether you are a tailor, carpenter, law enforcement officer, or in any other profession. It's a guiding principle worth following.
