The Interconnectedness of the Law of Divine Oneness in Recovery

Chapter 1: Understanding the Law of Divine Oneness
The Law of Divine Oneness highlights the interconnected nature of all beings, a principle that is integral to the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program. This philosophy emphasizes that recovery is not a solitary endeavor; rather, it thrives on the collective strength of the community. The core tenet of this law is that we are all interconnected through creation, underscoring that our experiences, struggles, and victories are shared. The foundational texts of AA, including the Big Book and the Twelve Steps, consistently refer to "we" instead of "I." This distinction is vital: "I may drink, but WE achieve sobriety!" My own journey of recovery began when I hit rock bottom—physically, morally, and emotionally depleted.
The second paragraph of "How It Works" states, "If you want what we have and are willing to go to ANY LENGTHS to get it," then you're invited to join us. I had exhausted all avenues and found myself sinking deeper into despair, often confused about what was wrong, but aware that something was drastically off. In a moment of desperation, I found myself contemplating self-harm, uncertain of my next steps.
Yet, witnessing others who had embraced AA and transformed into happier, more liberated individuals ignited a spark of hope within me. I was eager to do whatever it took to obtain the joy they radiated, prompting me to immerse myself in the program. Through my interactions with fellow members, I quickly came to believe in the essence of the first three Steps: 1. I can’t. 2. He can. 3. I think I’ll let Him. As I engaged with others, I sensed a newfound power emerging, not only from those actively working the program but also from individuals striving to embrace their spiritual journeys.
The Law of Divine Oneness teaches us that every element of our universe is interlinked; thus, every thought, action, decision, and desire I harbor influences the greater whole. This interconnectedness extends to those around me, manifesting results that may be immediate or subtle. Emmet Fox wisely reminds us that every thought is akin to a prayer, highlighting the importance of mindfulness in our thinking—after all, our thoughts can significantly impact others. This principle will further unfold as we explore the Law of Vibration.
It's crucial to recognize that your sobriety holds immense significance, not just for yourself, but also for those in your orbit. The Law of Divine Oneness reinforces that we are all in this together, not only during meetings but also in the intervals between them. This period can often be the most critical, as we lack the constant reminders and support from our peers. Nevertheless, it’s essential to persist in our recovery efforts as best as we can. What is the ultimate outcome of this journey? How does the prospect of being "Happy, Joyous, and Free" resonate with you? This state of being is within reach—if we remain committed to pursuing it earnestly.
For those of us with complex lives, this program offers simplicity. Avoid overanalyzing the process; rather, engage with it continuously. How can you do this? Focus on progress, not perfection. Working the program doesn't mean memorizing the Twelve Steps or the Big Book; it simply involves taking the next appropriate action. Start by reciting the concise version of the Third Step: "God, help me." Then, step back and allow Him to work. How can you discern if a decision is right? If you are striving to the best of your ability and it feels correct, then it is. Any hint of doubt may warrant a reassessment. Embrace this straightforward approach, and you'll find your path to being Happy, Joyous, and Free! Blessings to you!
