Finding Joy and Purpose Through Spirituality: My Journey

Understanding My Spiritual Awakening
When I first encountered the AA program, I had no prior experience with religion or spirituality. My understanding was quite limited, often reduced to desperate pleas like, "God, help me out of this, and I'll never do it again."
There were times when I felt let down—either I believed God had failed me, or I felt guilty for not staying true to my promises. My sponsors encouraged me to explore this unfamiliar concept of spirituality. Although I was hesitant, my physical and emotional pain drove me to seek a change.
At AA meetings, I observed others laughing and sharing stories about challenges I thought were unbearable. I assumed that with their struggles, they should be drinking or feeling miserable, yet they appeared genuinely happy and free. This inspired me to focus on the second paragraph of "How It Works," which suggests that if I desired what others had, I should be ready to make sacrifices to achieve it.
Eager for a better life, I committed myself to pursuing the same happiness those around me exhibited. Before long, my initial facade began to fade, and I started feeling more at ease. The intense desire for a drink diminished rapidly, and as my self-esteem improved, my perspective of others transformed as well.
I found myself sharing my newfound sense of peace and relief with anyone willing to listen, perhaps even those who weren't. I had once viewed most people as unkind, but as I applied the principles I learned, I was astonished to see them in a better light. My initial "fake it until you make it" attitude gradually evolved into genuine affection for many.
Surrendering to a Higher Power
When I fully embraced the third step of surrendering to a Higher Power, I began to appreciate myself, which in turn allowed me to love others more deeply. My previous notion of love was often misguided, resembling more of a physical attraction than true affection. The essence of the third step can be boiled down to a simple phrase: "Help me, God," which transformed my life into one filled with joy.
Over time, my cries for help transitioned to expressions of gratitude: "Thank you, God." I now feel genuinely happy, joyous, and free. This doesn't mean I am immune to life's difficulties—losing loved ones, physical discomforts, and differing opinions still affect me. Yet, I find joy in making decisions that once overwhelmed me, and I experience freedom in living without mind-altering substances.
I rely on my Higher Power—whom I call God—to guide my life. I remind myself to ask for help and then step aside to let Him take control.
Embracing Spirituality
Regardless of how long you've been in the program, you can experience this transformation too. Overcoming reservations about "the God thing" is crucial. If I, a once angry and aggressive person, can change my life, so can you. It's never too late to start anew. My Higher Power is here for you just as He is for me.
Give it a try—you may find it rewarding! Thank you, God!
