Chapter 1: Understanding the Role of Spirituality
Many people find themselves in moments of desperation, pleading for help, “God, get me out of this situation, and I promise I won’t repeat my mistakes!”

It's common to question, “Why do misfortunes continue to plague me, despite my prayers on Sundays, Christmas, and Easter?” or “I dedicated myself to my church and became an usher, yet troubles still pursue me!”
This leads to a crucial realization: what makes me think that a mere hour each week spent focusing on positive thoughts and striving to do good will sustain me throughout the week? Previously, my understanding of God was anthropomorphized—perched on a golden throne in the sky, judging my fate regarding heaven or hell, joy or sorrow.
Spiritual teachings reveal that our Higher Power resides within us, rather than being an external entity. This allows us to define our Higher Power in personal terms, whenever we choose.
For newcomers to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), their group often serves as a representation of their Higher Power. This connection is powerful; leaving an AA meeting generally uplifts us, making us feel better than when we arrived due to shared experiences and insights.
Now, the challenge arises—how can we sustain these positive feelings beyond the confines of church or AA meetings?
Spirituality suggests revisiting the 3rd Step whenever we experience emotional highs or lows—or even when we feel indifferent. This step encourages us to reflect on what aspects of our will and life we have reclaimed from our Higher Power.
Each morning, as we prepare to face the day, we implement the 11th Step, seeking the understanding of His will for us and the strength to follow through. His will is for us to experience happiness, joy, and freedom, not to be overwhelmed by issues. This sense of well-being is cultivated by reaching out for help regularly—not just on Sundays or during AA gatherings.
So, how do we ask for this guidance? The answer lies in a simplified version of the 3rd Step: “God Help Me!” This phrase serves as a daily reminder of my identity as a spiritual being living in a universe governed by spiritual principles. I am an individual expression of God, interconnected with all that exists.
With this positive energy surrounding me and others, how could I possibly fail? I assure you, this approach can be effective for you as well, regardless of your tenure in the program. Just utter “God Help Me” and allow Him to guide you.
