Exploring the Market for AI-Generated Art: A Comprehensive Guide

Chapter 1: The Rise of AI Art
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has made significant strides in creating remarkable artwork. Some of these AI-generated pieces have fetched impressive prices in the market.
Is It Possible to Sell AI-Generated Artwork?
Yes, selling AI-generated artwork is entirely feasible. However, it’s crucial to understand that not every AI service permits the use and redistribution of their generated images. Below, we will explore the licensing policies of several popular AI text-to-image platforms.
Section 1.1: OpenAI’s Dall-E2
Dall-E2 stands out as one of the leading AI art generators available today. Currently, it remains in private beta, and access is granted through a waitlist. Importantly, OpenAI prohibits the commercial use and redistribution of any images created using Dall-E2. The latest content policy was updated on April 6, 2022.
For those unfamiliar with the quality of artwork produced by Dall-E2, here are a few examples displayed on the tool’s homepage.
Interestingly, several users on Reddit have reported receiving surveys from OpenAI regarding potential pricing once the service is publicly available. This suggests that a subscription model may be on the horizon, which could potentially allow users to sell these images commercially.
Section 1.2: MidJourney
MidJourney is my personal favorite when it comes to generating art. It produces some of the finest AI images available. Here are some examples from the community feed.
By subscribing for a monthly fee of $10, users are granted a Standard License. This license allows for the use, modification, publishing, and selling of the generated images, with the exception of blockchain applications. If assets are associated with blockchain technologies, users must either pay Midjourney 20% of revenue exceeding $20,000 a month or negotiate an alternative agreement with the company.
Here is a detailed overview of their Copyright and Trademark policies from the official website.
Section 1.3: Dream by Wombo
Dream by Wombo was among the first AI art generators made widely available. While the quality may not match that of Dall-E2 or MidJourney, it is user-friendly and free. Wombo offers a royalty-free license, granting users ownership of all generated artworks, including associated copyrights and intellectual property rights.
For more information, you can refer to the full Intellectual Property section in Wombo’s Terms of Service.
Chapter 2: Selling AI Art Successfully
With the growth of artificial intelligence, a new genre of art is emerging that commands high prices. While some skeptics may question the value of machine-generated art, its popularity and marketability are undeniable.
Now that you are aware of platforms like MidJourney and Wombo that allow for the sale of AI-generated art, the next step involves identifying the best places to sell your creations and attracting potential buyers. There are numerous platforms available, and this topic deserves its own discussion.
