Exciting Adventures Ahead: Celebrating Sobriety in New Zealand
Written on
Chapter 1: Reflection and Celebration
Recently, I reached a significant milestone—nearly 11 months of sobriety! To mark this occasion, I've made the decision to embark on an exciting journey. I booked my flights to New Zealand yesterday, a destination that feels incredibly distant from the UK. Although I currently reside in Japan, the 10.5-hour flight still feels like quite the adventure!
Just the other day, I was discussing my travel plans with a friend I met through the ‘Iamsober’ app. As I approach my one-year sobriety mark, I realized I need to plan something special. Initially, I felt guilty about spending money on myself, but then I remembered how much I’ve saved by not drinking.
Section 1.1: Financial Reflections
After calculating my savings from quitting alcohol, I was astonished to discover that I had saved nearly $1,800! This amount feels even larger given the current unfavorable exchange rate. To put it into perspective, my monthly house loan payments are less than a third of that total.
Reflecting on my past spending, I recognize I was quite conservative in estimating my weekly alcohol expenses. It’s honestly embarrassing to think about how much money I wasted on drinking. The realization of how much time and money was lost is overwhelming. I often wonder about the experiences I could have had with those funds.
Section 1.2: Embracing New Choices
While I can’t change the past, I have the power to make better decisions moving forward. The anticipation of this trip fills me with excitement, but also a bit of anxiety. Stressful situations can easily trigger cravings, and I need to remain vigilant.
This will be my first solo trip in a long time, and I’ve battled a fear of flying throughout my life. Additionally, travel often brings the temptation to indulge, under the guise of being on holiday. I must be cautious and continue to prioritize my sobriety.
Chapter 2: The Journey Ahead
In the video "What Happens To Your Body When You Stop Drinking Alcohol," the impact of sobriety on physical health is explored, highlighting the benefits of a life free from alcohol.
As I prepare for this trip, I remind myself of the rewarding aspects of my sober life—traveling, studying, reading, writing, and dreaming of possibilities I once thought were unattainable. It’s crucial to keep these benefits at the forefront of my mind, especially when I occasionally feel nostalgic about past drinking experiences.
The second video, "The First 100 Days & Being Sober On Tour With Clare Pooley | Life Cast Highlights," shares insights into maintaining sobriety while traveling, offering valuable tips for those in similar situations.
Last March, I traveled to Europe and managed to maintain my sobriety, but I suspect it may be more challenging this time around since I’ll be alone. Nonetheless, I’m determined to embrace this journey and succeed.
I’m eager to face this challenge head-on and prove to myself that I can thrive in this new chapter of my life.
