The Magic of Full Moons
You might think that after witnessing full moons every month for over six decades, their charm would fade. Yet, whenever I catch a glimpse of one unexpectedly, I find myself marveling as if it were my first experience with this celestial wonder!
“Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own…” – Frank Sinatra
The moon's hue, size, and glowing presence cast a romantic and mysterious light over the world. Beyond its crucial role in influencing ocean tides, many may not realize that June 14, 2022, marked a special full moon.
“Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style someday
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ your way…” – Andy Williams
Traditionally known as the Strawberry Moon, this June full moon also represented the second supermoon of 2022. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth while simultaneously being full, making it appear 15% brighter than an ordinary full moon.
“Everybody was dancin’ in the moonlight…” – King Harvest
For the remaining full moons in the Northern Hemisphere for 2022, we can anticipate:
- July 13: Buck Moon (also a supermoon)
- August 11: Sturgeon Moon (also a supermoon, with no Blue Moon this year)
- September 10: Harvest Moon
- October 9: Hunter’s Moon
- November 8: Beaver Moon
- December 7: Cold Moon

Marta Henriques shared her moon-gazing experience last week, expressing her awe:
“Last night, I stood in my backyard, gazing at the sky and the moon. How can the universe be so immense? What other wonders exist beyond our sight? I found myself entranced by the moon's majesty.”
The First Journey to the Moon
The emotions felt by those who first set foot on the moon are truly profound.
Will the accumulation of countless facts about the moon's surface diminish the joy of a moonlit stroll? According to Slashdotted, China's latest lunar “map” reveals:
“The map features 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 types of rock, and 14 distinct structures, all essential for scientific exploration and planning future landings on the Moon.”
China Has Released a New Geologic Map of the Moon
“At night when the stars light up my room
I sit by myself, talking to the moon
Trying to get to you, in hopes you’re on the other side
Talking to me too, or am I a fool
Who sits alone talking to the moon…” – Bruno Mars
Don’t let the beauty of each month's full moon pass you by. Take just five minutes to soak in its splendor against a backdrop of twinkling stars. There’s no spectacle quite like it!
