Embracing Nostalgia While Navigating the Future

Written on

Chapter 1: The Struggle with Change

I once heard someone remark, “You realize you’re aging when you start resisting new technology.” Although I consider myself reasonably tech-savvy, I can’t help but feel an increasing apprehension and even resentment toward the rapid changes. Can anyone else relate to this sentiment?

I often find myself concerned about the education of today’s children—or the apparent lack of it. But who can say what knowledge will be necessary for them in the future? It’s a perplexing thought. While I grapple with these concerns, my husband seems undeterred. He embraces advanced technological concepts, advocating for innovations that benefit everyone rather than just a select few.

Flying cars? Count me in! I adore both automobiles and aviation, so the thought of soaring through the skies in a car is exhilarating. Remember the film “The Fifth Element”? It’s a favorite of mine, showcasing airborne vehicles navigating bustling sky streets. I’ve long believed that such technology might already exist, but perhaps it's being concealed while the world continues to rely on outdated income models—like oil.

And then there’s the astonishing evolution of robotics. The variety and capabilities of robots today are nothing short of remarkable! Additionally, the realm of Virtual Reality (VR) has progressed significantly, likely spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

While I often express frustration over kids being glued to their screens, I worry they’re missing out on the experiences we cherished—running wild with friends, exploring love, rebellion, and life itself. My concern is that future generations might struggle with what we deem to be normal human interactions. As our generation still navigates towards understanding and harmony, will our kids learn these essential skills, or will they find themselves devoid of the need for real connections?

This raises a critical question: What will tomorrow’s norm look like? Will our children be perceived as simpletons, or will we appear as relics, endlessly lecturing about the importance of human connection? If robots can convincingly mimic warmth and texture, will people opt for robotic companionship over human interaction simply for ease? That notion is quite unsettling.

Chapter 2: Nostalgia's Pull

As my husband and I discussed these issues, I was suddenly transported by nostalgia, feeling the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, the salty breeze, and the incessant chirping of crickets in the background. In that moment, I yearned to escape into a sun-soaked paradise, and it made me question why I didn’t pursue that life earlier.

When I had the opportunity to live in such a beautiful place, I hesitated. Even after meeting my husband, it was clear his roots lay in the UK, and he seemed content without the need for nature or a vacation to recharge. He approaches life with a pragmatic mindset, steadfastly moving forward.

During my solo travels in Mexico and Dalmatia, I yearned for a deeper purpose. I realized that while I cherished independence, I also desired to share my life with someone who resonated with my values. Ironically, when I let go of the hope of finding such a person, I unexpectedly met my husband—an encounter that felt almost fated.

Through him, I discovered a sense of purpose, and it’s delightful to share my life with him. Yet, there remains a void—a longing for sunshine, travel, and the tranquil sounds of nature, like crickets singing in the evening. This yearning ties back to my childhood memories where I felt safest, connected to the sun and sea. I often feel like a lizard, craving the warmth of a sunlit rock.

Is there a way forward? Should I restructure my life to incorporate more sun and serenity? I hope that we, as a society, will preserve untouched spaces, allowing us to reconnect with nature, work the soil, pick fruits, sing, and find moments of solitude to recharge with our thoughts.

I don’t mind if parts of our world embrace future innovations; I simply hope we can retain some of the past. It’s not that I believe the old ways are superior, but I ponder what we, as humans, truly need at our core. At what point might we risk losing our humanity? Conversely, could new technology provide a pathway to greater humanity, equality, and the fulfillment of our dreams for a meaningful life?

At this juncture, anything seems possible. History has shown we are not always responsible with technological advancements. Yet, I remain open to the idea of a hopeful future, akin to Star Trek, as long as I can stay on a vibrant and beautiful Earth. If my husband dreams of venturing into space, I won’t stand in his way. :)
