Embracing Meditation: A Guide to Enjoying Every Moment
Written on
The Essence of Living in the Moment
Meditation might not be the problem; it could be your overall approach to life. Are you so focused on future achievements — the accolades of becoming more experienced, confident, and successful — that you forget to appreciate the now? Consider the soft morning light streaming through your office window. Have you truly taken notice?
Is your typical mindset one of always looking ahead? Sometimes our idea of what’s normal can be completely misguided and counterproductive.
For instance, think back to a long flight. Did you spend those hours grumbling about cramped seating, subpar service, or bland meals? If so, you overlooked the fact that your flight is part of the adventure, not merely a means to an end.
Did you engage with fellow passengers, or did you isolate yourself with distractions? Even at 35,000 feet, remarkable experiences are unfolding; there are fascinating individuals to connect with and meals being served.
True joy can be found in the journey itself. Are you merely going through the motions while waiting for the next big event?
Consider this: you could take a helicopter ride to the mountain summit, but you’d miss the thrill of the climb. Your life is a spectacular journey, and every moment — from breath to breath, step to step — contributes to it. Relish each moment along the way, and enjoy the destination once you arrive.
Are you constantly in a state of waiting? For happy hours, meals, weekends, vacations, graduations, weddings, promotions, or retirement? Are you genuinely living, or just preparing for what’s next?
It’s never too late to step out of your thoughts and immerse yourself in the journey. Meditation can guide you in this endeavor.
How to Meditate Effectively
If your aim in meditation is to find calmness, focus, or enlightenment, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. Such aspirations are inherently future-oriented, while meditation is fundamentally about the present. During meditation, we cast aside future ambitions like we do our shoes.
The Nature of the Present Moment
A student once approached his meditation teacher, lamenting, "I feel so distracted, my legs hurt, and I keep falling asleep. It's unbearable!" The teacher calmly responded, "This too shall pass."
When the student returned a week later, he was ecstatic, declaring, "My meditation is fantastic! I feel alive!" The teacher replied, "This too shall pass."
— A Zen Parable
You may eventually experience a moment of enlightenment, but it will occur in the present — that’s the only time that exists. Even when you anticipate such moments, it’s in the now.
You may also experience frustrating or painful meditations, and again, they will happen in the present. The only difference between joy and frustration lies in your state of mind.
The present moment is inseparable from you; it's your constant companion. Why not embrace it?
Many who meditate or explore Eastern spirituality understand the significance of the present, yet often struggle to believe it. Although I recognize that the present is all there is, I still find myself worrying about the future and feeling regret about the past.
Why does this happen? When will I truly understand?
The past and future infiltrate our thoughts, culture, philosophy, and even spirituality. While time travel stories are entertaining, they remain just that — entertainment.
However, you can dwell on time, and therein lies the challenge.
How to Meditate With Ease
Find a quiet space. Take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and allow your body to breathe naturally. Do this for three cycles.
Next, remind yourself that you are in your body. Your breath sustains you. If distracting thoughts arise, acknowledge them and let them drift away. If you find yourself planning what to do after meditation, notice that thought and release it. Concentrate on remaining present for five to ten minutes and observe how you feel.
Living with Ease
By now, the message should be clear: engage actively in your life rather than merely thinking about it. However, this is not easy; it requires practice.
Here are two straightforward techniques to enhance your mindfulness:
Meditate Daily
Even if just for a few minutes, cultivate your awareness of the present. Experience the magic of realizing when your mind wanders and returning to stillness. This moment is where true learning occurs. Establishing a daily meditation routine will help set a positive tone for your day, allowing its benefits to permeate your life.
Utilize a Breath Mantra for Grounding
You don’t need to force mindfulness. Instead, whenever you notice your mind wandering, pause. Take three breaths as described above. Look around and mentally note what you see and feel: "The painting on my desk, the tree outside, the aroma of coffee."
This brief exercise can be performed in under two minutes. Use it whenever you feel anxious or unfocused, and you’ll notice a difference.
Incorporate your breath mantra into your daily routine, or perhaps you have another method that brings you back to the present moment.
Remember this:
"The past has no power over the present moment."
