Embracing Individuality: Why Life Isn't a Contest
Written on
Chapter 1: The Burden of Comparison
Imagine watching a young musician effortlessly play the guitar, leaving everyone in awe. You soon learn that he’s only been at it for two years, while you’ve been strumming for nearly two decades. Although you can hold your own, his skills surpass yours in ways you’ve struggled to achieve.
This experience can be disheartening, especially when you scroll through videos of others mastering complex pieces, only to find comments filled with frustration like “What’s the point?” or “I’m done with this!”
Comparison can steal your joy.
Section 1.1: The Joy Thief
Constantly measuring yourself against others won't bring you happiness. In fact, it often drives you further from it, as there will always be someone who excels beyond your reach. While it's commendable that others achieve great heights in their professions, it shouldn't diminish your own path.
When you begin to compete with others, your focus shifts from personal fulfillment to a relentless chase for superiority. This envy transforms life into a competition.
Your neighbor’s new pool prompts you to get one, and when you upgrade your car, they follow suit with an even nicer model. If a friend starts writing on Medium, you feel compelled to join in, often feeling overshadowed by those who are more skilled.
The notion of having to be the best can be exhausting.
Section 1.2: Finding Your Own Path
What someone else possesses won’t inherently bring you joy. Your uniqueness, skills, and career should reflect your desires and not those of others. Accepting this idea can be liberating, albeit challenging.
Some of the most recognized artists aren’t technically the best musicians. For instance, Tom DeLonge from Blink-182 or Kurt Cobain from Nirvana may not be the most skilled guitarists, but their songwriting and distinct personalities resonated with audiences.
Engage in activities for your own satisfaction.
Chapter 2: The Power of Inspiration
Instead of allowing competition and comparison to diminish your joy, consider using others as sources of inspiration.
Inspiration can lead to new ideas and perspectives. In writing, for example, exploring others' narratives can spark fresh thoughts. Even a simple phrase from someone else's work can ignite a desire to express your own ideas.
The talented young guitarist who outshines you might offer insights and techniques that can enhance your own abilities.
Instead of comparing, aim to inspire and be inspired.
Cheers!
