Designing My Ideal 5-Hour Workday as a Full-Time Writer

Chapter 1: Embracing a New Lifestyle
In 2021, I made the leap to become a full-time writer, leaving my previous job behind. This transition came with a heavy expectation to prove my ability to generate a substantial income. The pressure was immense, and by the end of that year, I found myself utterly exhausted.
During a five-day writing training program, my body finally protested. I was struck by a debilitating headache that left me unable to work or even look at a screen. The program concluded on December 22nd, and I took a much-needed break until January 3rd, 2022. This pause was rejuvenating; it gave me a chance to reflect and appreciate the simpler joys in life.
From this experience, I derived two key resolutions for 2022. First, I decided to abandon monetary goals. When you're fixated on a specific income target, it can limit your potential, similar to being stuck in a traditional 9-to-5 job with a fixed salary. Secondly, I aimed to concentrate on my work for just five hours each day over a typical five-day workweek. This piece outlines how I'm crafting my perfect 5-hour workday as a solopreneur.
Section 1.1: Strategic Planning: 30 Minutes
The day begins with 30 minutes dedicated to planning. I wake up, grab a diary and pen, and outline my tasks for the day without any digital distractions. This time allows me to identify my most important task, ensuring that I can focus on it as soon as I power up my computer. I find that this half-hour is a vital investment in setting clear priorities, leading to more mindful and productive days.
Section 1.2: Focused Work: 2 Hours
Once planning is complete, I dedicate the next two hours to my top priority. This could involve writing a new article, editing a chapter of my upcoming book, or developing a new product for my audience. While I have a two-hour window, I'm aware that if I'm deeply engaged, I may lose track of time and extend beyond this limit. The excitement of being in the zone can be hard to resist, and I'm flexible with my schedule to accommodate that.
Section 1.3: Collaborative Work: 1.5 Hours
The following portion of my day is allocated to tasks involving others, such as freelancing or engaging with clients. This time includes responding to emails, making calls, and even recording guest podcasts or YouTube videos. Each day varies; some days, I review my interns' work, while on others, I set new tasks and organize workflows for the week ahead.
Section 1.4: Finalizing Tasks: 30 Minutes
The last half hour of my workday is reserved for miscellaneous tasks. This includes promoting my articles on social media, replying to comments on LinkedIn, repurposing content for Quora, and scheduling posts. One of my goals for this year is to post daily on LinkedIn. To avoid morning stress, I plan my LinkedIn posts the night before, ensuring I can take my time in the morning for exercise and a relaxed start.
Closing Thoughts
Three weeks into January, I find joy in my new routine. I work five hours a day, five days a week, allowing me ample time to enjoy life. I spend my afternoons exercising, exploring cooking, and taking walks with my dog. Occasionally, I feel guilty for what seems like "wasting" time, but I remind myself that success doesn't stem from constant hustle.
I've learned that smart planning allows you to achieve your goals without burnout. My ambitions are as high as ever, but prioritizing my health is essential for sustaining my productivity. Weekends are reserved for relaxation and reflection, a crucial balance that keeps me grounded.
