Convergence of the Three Norths: A Rare Alignment in Dorset

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Three Norths

An intriguing phenomenon has occurred: for the first time in recorded history, three types of north poles are aligning over Langton Matravers, a village near Swanage in Dorset, on November 2, 2022. But what exactly are these different norths?

The following section outlines the unique characteristics of each north pole.

Section 1.1: Understanding the Different Norths

To begin, we have the geographic poles, defined as the points where all longitudinal lines converge. The northernmost point of this convergence is known as True North. In addition, we have the Magnetic North Pole, which is where the Earth’s magnetic field points straight downwards. Consequently, if one were to use a compass at the Magnetic North Pole, the needle would point downward toward the Earth's core. Lastly, there is Grid North, depicted as a blue line on Ordinance Survey maps, which indicates the direction of north along the grid lines of a map projection. Many topographic maps, including those from the U.S. Geological Survey and Great Britain’s Ordinance Survey, illustrate the distinctions between grid north, true north, and magnetic north. Understanding the differences between magnetic and grid north is vital for effective navigation, especially in maritime and aviation contexts.

Section 1.2: The Significance of the Triple Alignment

These three norths have aligned over Langton Matravers for the first time, and they are expected to remain converged for three and a half years as they traverse through the UK. According to the Ordinance Survey, "In 2014, for the first time since the 1660s, magnetic north shifted from being west of grid north to east. This change began in the south-west corner of Britain and will gradually progress across the entire country over the next 12 to 13 years. Now, a third line is coming into alignment — true north, which represents the direction of lines of longitude converging at the North Pole."

The Magnetic North is continually shifting north-westward due to the Earth's magnetic field generated in its core. This ongoing movement has led to the current alignment, which is notably rare. Such an occurrence has not transpired for centuries.

"It will pass just over halfway up England, moving through Hebden Bridge by August 2024 and exiting the English coast at Berwick-Upon-Tweed a year later in August 2025," states the Ordinance Survey.

How fascinating is this alignment?

Chapter 2: Implications and Observations

The first video discusses what happens when the three 'norths' collide, offering insights into the scientific implications of this rare event.

The second video explores the scenic beauty of Lynton & Lynmouth in Devon, UK, showcasing one of the most picturesque areas in Devon during a walking tour.
