In response, BMW has looked to Tesla for inspiration, yet they appear to be charting a path that may ultimately surpass Tesla's efforts.

Tesla's Strategy and Challenges

At the heart of Tesla's strategy to maintain its supremacy in the EV market is the 4680 battery pack. Introduced in 2020, Elon Musk promised that this new battery design would reduce costs by 56%, integrate into the car's structure, offer higher energy density, and enable faster charging times. The 4680 is a significant cylindrical cell, measuring 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height, which simplifies assembly by reducing the number of batteries required in a pack. However, early production models revealed that the 4680 battery did not meet all its ambitious targets. Although the larger cell design did lead to a 30% reduction in assembly costs, the energy density fell short compared to the existing 21700 cells. Additionally, the promised charging speeds were not achieved, and Tesla continued to face production hurdles with this new battery technology.

BMW Observes and Innovates

Recognizing Tesla's challenges, BMW has set out to create its Gen6 battery, learning from the shortcomings of the 4680. BMW's design features even larger cylindrical cells—either 4695 or 46120—while also incorporating a structural battery pack that further simplifies assembly and reduces costs. Unlike Tesla's approach, BMW employs conventional wet-coated electrodes and a silicon-doped graphite anode, which are both established technologies. This innovation allows for a cobalt-free cathode while maintaining competitive capacity and charging speeds.

With a shift to an 800-volt architecture, BMW's Gen6 battery packs are designed to charge from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes, boasting a higher energy density and a cost reduction of up to 50% compared to current models. This compact design is expected to enhance range by 30%, potentially enabling EVs with a remarkable 620-mile range.
