The Agony of Unread Emails: A Modern Dilemma

Chapter 1: The Long Wait
How long has it been since my last email was sent? Let me tally the days...

In the depths of my sent folder, my feelings linger untouched, like a forgotten relic. Three weeks have passed with nary a glance, thought, or whisper of acknowledgment. I yearn for my message to be acknowledged, to be brought to life.
There’s no “I” in email, save for “me.” True, I recognize the literal presence of “I,” but I’m uninterested in such trivialities. No person is an island, no email a bustling city, and certainly no “read receipt” has come my way. I see you, I know you. To others, you respond and engage, but to me, only an echo of silence remains.
What have I done to deserve this silence, this neglect? If only I knew my misdeeds, I would gladly amend my ways. All I desire is a response.
Was it perhaps when I went out for lunch with Susan, leaving you alone with your frozen lasagna? I meant no disrespect; she had a 2-for-1 coupon, and I had to be her “for 1.” My appetite for that chicken sandwich may have overshadowed my loyalty to you, and I fear that was the turning point.
Or could there be someone else? Someone whose words resonate with you, filling the void I’ve left? If that’s the case, please enlighten me. If another fulfills your needs better than I, then let me go, for the desolate space of your inbox is a frigid wasteland. I've wandered this path before; we've been here before.
Do you remember the infamous Office Depot Incident of 2009? It's etched in my memory like a fresh scar. You assured me you would approve my order request, yet when the time came, Accounting could not verify the purchase, leaving me responsible for the $11. It was deducted from my paycheck because my email remained unread in your inbox.
Never again will I view 80lb. cardstock without a pang of bitterness. Once more, my requests lie dormant in your inbox, awaiting even the faintest flicker of attention. What do you feel for me? Have I drifted too far from your regard?
But seriously, I need your approval on my expense report. Accounting has already inquired about it three times.
